What we do
Product Quality and Consumer Safety
The European cosmetics industry is based on product safety and innovation. Safety is the primary consideration.
Manufacturers strive for ever higher safety levels—and the industry has an excellent safety record. Current figures show that only one unit out of every million produced attracts a safety allegation, either founded or unfounded.
Innovation through research and development is crucial for such a vibrant industry whose products are closely linked to the lifestyle and well-being of its consumers.
The large sums of money that cosmetics manufacturers dedicate to research and development result in products responsive to consumer demand.
Through scientific research, manufacturers are today offering an increasingly natural look, more advanced skin care products for women, varied skin care ranges for men and a wider choice of hygiene products.
The cosmetics industry introduces several thousand new or improved products every year. A commitment to innovation is the means by which Europe’s manufacturers maintain their global competitiveness—improved product performance, the highest standards of safety and a reduction in environmental impact.
Research into Alternatives to Animal Testing
The cosmetics industry is leading the way in the use of alternative methods and is united in its search for more validated alternatives. Colipa is facilitating this work in Europe through its Steering Committee on Alternatives to Animal Testing (AAT) and internationally through cooperation with industry associations in the United States and Japan.
Working with the EU (European Union) Institutions
Colipa works closely with the EU institutions to achieve balanced policies and legislation. Its aim is to provide a regulatory environment that encourages innovation and supports a strong and competitive cosmetics industry in Europe.
A major project has been Colipa’s involvement in shaping European legislation on cosmetic products. The main policy instrument affecting the industry is the Cosmetics Directive (76/768/EEC). This regulatory “bible” with consumer safety at its core serves as a model for harmonisation of cosmetics legislation on a global scale.
