EPAA Annual Conference – Dissemination of 3Rs information

EPAA Annual Conference, Brussels, 6 November 2009

The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Dissemination of 3Rs’ Information. The conference was opened by Commissioner Verheugen, Vice-President of the European Commission, together with the EPAA’s Steering Committee co-Chairs, Georgette Lalis and Odile de Silva.

Georgette Lalis, from the European Commission’s DG, gave an overview of the history of the 3Rs with regard to EU regulation.  She regarded the voluntary nature of the EPAA’s partnership as a strength, enabling members to make a valuable contribution to the partnership. She believed that the creation of the EPAA had created a clear momentum in the field of alternatives, which means that there is a clear interest in continuing the partnership.

The industry co-chair, Gert Ries from Johnson & Johnson, was represented by J&J International Vice President, Jose Justino. Mr Justino emphasised how the EPAA had enabled trust building among the partners and how changes to the structure would allow for more efficiency in the working method of the partnership. According to Mr Justino, Significant opportunities still remained in the field.

The Vice-President of the Commission, Commissioner Verheugen, underlined the importance of carrying on the legacy of the last few years of the EPAA. “We must not lose the momentum,” he said. The Commissioner felt a lot had been achieved by the partnership through collaboration.   

Odile de Silva shared with the audience the achievements of 2009. Regarding Replacement in repeat-dose toxicity, the partnership has identified areas of possible progress and will now work on these as well as continuing to look at new opportunities to advance alternatives research across the 3 Rs. Ms de Silva explained the fundamental importance of ensuring that all parts of the dissemination process, for getting the correct scientific information to the right target groups.  

The Conference covered many different aspects of dissemination. The EPAA poster award with the theme: “Raising the profile of 3Rs research: science and communication” was also presented.
