Organic and Natural Products
Many cosmetic products on the market state they are “natural” or “organic”.
In general, the word “natural” displayed on cosmetics refers to the origin of raw materials or the composition of a product. “Organic” or “bio” usually means that the raw materials for the product were produced according to specific rules and regulations.
The requirements for the use of the terms “natural” and “organic” on cosmetics are interpreted differently from country to country because different organisations across Europe have developed their own standards and certification systems.
However, it is important to realise that all the ingredients used in cosmetics are chemicals, whether natural or man-made, including water which is one of the most ‘natural’ substances on earth.
Everything and everyone is made up of chemicals. So, whether a cosmetic is made up of natural or man-made, ingredients, it is still subject to the same strict safety assessments, as required by cosmetics legislation, to make sure it is safe to use.
