How to be sun-smart
Consumer safety is the overriding concern of the cosmetics industry. Manufacturers have a commitment to sun protection and are leading the way in testing and labelling. They also provide information to consumers on responsible behaviour towards sun protection.
Most sun protection products give clear advice on how much to use and how frequently they should be applied.
According to the European Commission, six filled teaspoons of sunscreen are needed to cover the whole body of an average-sized adult. Sunscreen should be re-applied frequently, to maintain protection, especially after perspiring, swimming or towelling.
UV radiation penetrates clouds and water. Areas of skin on top of the water will receive more radiation than on dry land owing to reflection of UV radiation from the water’s surface.
Sun protection products are an important part of the precautions to be taken against the sun’s harmful rays. Other measures include:
- Avoid excessive sun exposure at peak hours (usually between 11am to 3 pm)
- Keep yourself well covered, including hat, T-shirt, and sunglasses
- Avoid direct sun exposure for babies and young children
- Use sunscreen products generously
